Self-discipline is an ability to control your mind, thoughts and your actions (yourself). I say, we all have self-discipline, more or less.
Then why we feel like we don’t have self-discipline?
The reason is we don’t practice it or master it. If you don’t have self-discipline in some level , you don’t come this far in your life.
Practising self-discipline leads you to have a better successful and happy life. “Forbes” says, according to a 2013 study by Wilhelm Hoffman, people with high self-discipline are happier than those who has less self-discipline.
Being more self-disciplined leads you to make better choices in your life and ease you to take best decision of your life without feeling overwhelming. In other words, self-discipline helps you to make healthy choices instead of making emotional choices.
Developing self-discipline will be easier if you follow these tips.
· Identify and remove your bad habits
Bad habits make distinctions in your life. They block the balance of your inner power of achieving your goals.
You can make a list of your goals against what bad habit distract you to go for your goal.
As an example,
Goal- finish the lecture notes within an hour
Bad habits/distraction- always check social media, Netflix
Now you know what make you distracted from your goals.

Let’s find the solution for your distractions
You know that all your distractions are based on your bad habits. Therefore the best thing to do is replace your bad habits with good ones.
As a solution for the above distraction, you can set your timer for 5 minutes to check social media after finishing the lecture. That 5 minutes could be consider as a reward for completing your lecture.
Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, explains that habit behaviours are traced to a part of the brain called the basal ganglia – a portion of the brain associated with emotions, patterns, and memories. Decisions, on the other hand, are made in the prefrontal cortex, a completely different area. When a behaviour becomes habit, we stop using our decision-making skills and instead function on autopilot.
· Have a daily routine
When you have a daily routine, you can schedule everything in a day. When you do your daily tasks for a schedule every day, it became your habit and also you take the control of your mind and make your self to spend the day according to your schedule.
· Start with small steps
This way is easier to practice new habits. If you want to make your bedroom clean and tidy, start to make your bed every day before you go out from your bedroom in the morning. Make it as the first task of your day. The only thing you must keep in your mind is not to start another task without finishing the first one.
· Reward yourself for every accomplishment
Once you complete your daily tasks, give some application for you. This could be anything that healthy.
I am sending an appreciation mail to myself at the end of the day, if I complete all the task that I scheduled.
· Balance your mental and physical health
Having a balanced, healthy diet and regular exercise makes not only improves your physical health but also your mental happiness.
Meditation is an extraordinary tool which most of successful entrepreneurs, Scientists, Doctors and high level performers in the society use to maintain their daily mental well being.
Combination of a weak mental and physical health will create a catastrophic effect on your sense of self control.
