New Year Resolutions...

Writer's picture: mymindfulnesslivingmymindfulnessliving

It’s almost the end of this year and the perfect time to plan the next year too. When we talk about the new year, first thing that came to my mind was “new year resolutions”.

For me, it’s so important to have goals or plans in my life because, I believe that they provide us a proper navigation and help us to focus.

But the most important thing that we need to keep in mind when we set our goals is being realistic. Simply, our goals or plans should be realistic and achievable.

I know that there is a saying of “Dream big” and yes, you can dream big and don’t forget to be realistic too.

Let’s see how to set our realistic new year resolutions…

First of all, your mind needs to be calm and clear in order to get the best out you. You can do relaxing meditation or listen to a song or you can do whatever that makes you feel relax before starting this.

Now this is the hardest part of this process which is thinking.

Your goals should meet the following requirements,

· Should not make you bored at any point

· Should make you happy and satisfied

· Should make you the best version of yourself.

While making your resolutions according to the above requirements, you can use S.M.A.R.T. Metrics too.

I’ll explain the meaning of these letters…

S – Specific

M - Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Relevant

T – Time Base

As an example , let’s say one of my new year goals is saving money. If I say just as “saving money” in my goals list, it doesn’t make any sense when it comes to initiate the goal because, this goal doesn’t meet any of the above requirements (S.M.A.R.T.)

My goal should be more specific and measurable. Therefore, I need to set an amount to this goal. Let’s say I need to save $5000 in every month.

However, my monthly income is $7000, and I need to pay my loan apart from rent and other general expenses. That means my goal is not attainable.

And…don’t forget that these goals need to be relevant to you. That means if your career path is in financial field and one of the resolutions is to complete an architect course, this goal is not relevant to you in order to get a promotion in your job unless you are planning to change your field.

Other thing is, don’t forget to set a time limit or a deadline for your goals because this will keep you focused and motivated to achieve your goals.

If you are not sure about your goals, you can use 5Ws (Why, What, When, Where, Who) for further clarification.

Now you are well prepared to set your goals and the next part is the process that you use to pursue your goals.

Let’s see how to make a better process to achieve our goals within next year.

First of all, you need to use a journal or notebook to note down your goals. Achieving goals or the new year resolutions is not an overnight task. Therefore, you need to be much organized. You have set a time frame or a deadline. You can break your goal into mini targets to achieve within your time frame. This is where prioritization comes to play.

In order to prioritise your targets, you can use Steven Covey’s “Priority Metrix” as follows.

Using above table, you can prioritise your work and it would be easier to identify what should you need to do first.

Now you will realise in order to do all these things you need to adjust your routing accordingly. If you don’t have a routing, this is the time to make one because, it will save your time , energy and it will help you to clear your mind as well.
